Our Clubs follow a traditional developmental arc:
Club Neo for newborn to 3 years
For the child who's just arrived, this is a tactile, sensual time. The colors, shape, feel, and even the taste of a book, coupled with the comfort of a warm lap and the pleasing sound of a trusted voice, set the stage for a lifelong love of reading.
Club Sprout for ages 3-5
This is a time of rapid growth and dramatic change, inside and out. Physically, your child is becoming more active, drawn to explore the world around her. At the same time, children this age are able to think about an object without it actually being present. Books with vivid pictures, active stories, and a compelling character speak to these newfound abilities.
Club Nova for ages 5-7
This is a stage where children really begin to shine. Your child can tell the difference between past, present, and future, though he may still be a little fuzzy about real and pretend. Empathy increases. Children will begin "reading" on their own, often making up new endings for familiar stories, and may start to recognize a few words.
As your child's vocabulary expands and sentences grow more complex, so do the books we offer. Rhythm, rhyme, and humor have a role to play here. Children at this age are naturally open – it's a good time to bring in other cultures and introduce stories that recognize our shared humanity.
Club Sage for ages 7-9
Full and detailed stories become the norm in these years. Children are reading not just for pleasure, but for fluency – so the risk is that reading can become associated with difficulty and hard work. Here we shift into chapter books, with better developed characters, detailed plot, satisfying resolutions – but with enough headings and pictures to provide clues to meaning. During this period parents transition from reading to your child to reading with your child. Our offerings will help your child stretch – just a little, not too much.
With every Club, Literati's selections embrace diversity, revere nature, and reflect universal human values.
Club Phoenix for ages 9-12
Club Phoenix is for the blooming bibliophile ages 9 to 12 who are ready to launch into the broader world of storytelling. Phoenix readers will be challenged by complex narratives, including a mix of new and classic middle grade novels, alongside nonfiction and activity books. The goal of Club Phoenix is to keep the love of reading alive through the preteen years with stories that challenge, inspire, and help young readers soar.
What does this mean for Club Sage?
Creating Club Phoenix for middle-grade novel readers will allow Club Sage to be tailored to kids who are moving onto chapter books as well as fun, more challenging, activity books. Based on subscriber feedback, children remaining in Sage will notice fewer books above their reading level and more books that are thematically appropriate for their age group.
What is a middle-grade novel anyway?
“Middle grade” doesn’t mean “middle school.” It means books for preteens that are more advanced than early chapter books in terms of subject and reading level, and not as advanced as young adult novels. Middle grade novels tend to have sweet, hopeful messages that focus on universal values like compassion, family, and love.
